A Man Says, “You Don’t Get 25% For Just Doing Your Job,” in Opposition to Overtipping
Tipping is a long-standing custom in the US that has recently generated a lot of controversy. Given that tips are the primary source of income for servers and other hospitality workers across the country, a man’s audacious social media statement has spurred a dialogue that questions the status quo.
The message that Dustin Anderson, also known as @therealdustinanderson on TikTok, is spreading is a reaction against the traditional tipping culture. He declares strongly, “So, I’m not tipping anymore-I’m done, I’m out,” in a video that has gone viral. His logic clarifies a point that many customers have been considering in silence in a world where tipping is customarily expected.
Dustin makes a simple case in his argument: Tipping was once only given for very good service, but he wonders when he last received such treatment. He contends that serving food and drinks to customers is a part of a server’s job description and does not automatically entitle them to a gratuity of 25%. “You don’t get 25 percent because you did your job,” he said.
There have been differing responses to Dustin’s video. Some viewers fully agree with his position, citing instances in which they believe tipping is superfluous. “I order carryout at Pizza Hut, and the options start at 18%,” a frustrated reviewer wrote. Still, not everybody shares Dustin’s viewpoint. Tipping, according to some, helps make up for the exceptionally low minimum salary that servers in the US get. “People forget that waiters, waitresses, and bus staff do not even receive minimum wages,” a commentator said. “I understand, but I work as a server and make $3.13 an hour,” another server said in response to their worries.
