A sore throat that feels like a “razor blade” and a croaky voice are becoming common signs of the new Covid strains that are spreading in the UK and US.
The strains XFG, which is known as Stratus, and NB.1.8.1, which is known as Nimbus, are making infections more common. The number of cases has doubled since August.
Experts suggest that these strains are not any more harmful than other Covid variants.
But the virus has modified its genes recently, which could make infections happen more often.
Today, health officials began their winter immunization campaign, urging millions to get their Covid and flu shots as hospitalizations soar.
In just one week, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that positives had gone up from 7.6% to 8.4% and admissions had gone up from 2.0 to 2.73 per 100,000.
The CDC claims that Covid levels in wastewater across the US are “moderate,” but four states are reporting “very high” amounts, and things are getting worse in the Northeast.
Scientists are still studying the two strains, but they suspect they are different from what was known before.

The amount of new Covid cases each day

Dr. Aaron Glatt, a US expert on infectious diseases, told Today.com that patients were stating they were in “severe pain, as if their throat was covered in razor blades.”
He went on to state, “Some patients with the most recent Covid variant have used this phrase to describe sore throat symptoms, even though it isn’t specific to Covid.”
Stratus was first detected in Southeast Asia in January.
The World Health Organization termed the variant a “variant under monitoring” because it had spread to 38 countries by June.
Nimbus was discovered in China about the same period, and it swiftly made its way to Europe and the US.
According to the UKHSA, Stratus made up around 63% of the monitored cases in the UK last month, and Nimbus made up 25%.
The health department warns that people who are sick should stay home if they can and stay away from others who are weak.
People who have to go outside should wear a mask.
But this week they added to their caution by noting, “Current data does not show that these variants cause more severe illness than other variants that are already out there.”
You should stay home and avoid contact with others who are vulnerable if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection like Covid and a high temperature or don’t feel well enough to go to work or conduct your normal activities.
“The Living with Covid advice hasn’t changed for those of us who can’t stay home. It will also lower the chance of spreading your infection to others.”
You can’t get free Covid tests from the NHS anymore, but you can still buy them at pharmacies.
persons over 75, persons with weak immune systems, and people who live in care homes can all get the winter Covid booster from the NHS app, the internet, or walk-in clinics.
Women who are pregnant and kids can also get the shot. This year, toddlers can now obtain a flu shot at community pharmacies.

Some high street pharmacists are delivering private Covid shots for as little as £99 ($134).
