I had raised my girls for fifteen years, preserving every unanswered invitation and returning picture that their mother had disregarded.
I thought I was done talking when she showed up for our daughter’s wedding with the man she had picked over us. The one box I never wanted to open was then requested by my kid.

My wife texted me as if to inquire about the weather fifteen years after she fled with her wealthy boss, leaving me with our six girls.
My phone rang when I was verifying my oldest daughter Adele’s final wedding payments in my kitchen.
Maya hadn’t contacted me in years. Not during graduations, not on the children’s birthdays, and not when our youngest, Shannon, asked me at the age of eight if her mother would recognize her voice if she called.
Maya hadn’t contacted me in years.
However, she was there.Robert, I’ll be at our daughter’s wedding. If I didn’t attend such an event, how would I appear to my new family? I don’t anticipate any drama from you.”Dad?”
A folder containing wedding bills was pressed up against Adele’s chest as she stood in the doorway. Even though she was 28, her beauty still took me by surprise.”What happened?” she inquired.I will attend our daughter’s wedding. It’s your mom.”What was it that she desired?
I gave the phone to her.
“She said ‘my new family.’” she said after reading the message.I observed.”Not “I’m sorry,” not “I miss
you.” Not even “May I come?” Harry is being brought by her. What was it that she desired?I’d wager on it.
The man Maya left with was Harry. her supervisor. The man who gave her the life she said she deserved, the car, the travels, and the money.
Shannon, who was nine months old, was in my arms as I stood in the hallway.
Thirteen-year-old Adele was on the stairs barefoot. Piper was eight years old. Five-year-old Penelope,
Mia, and Lucille were crying in the living room because they couldn’t figure out why their mother was packing suitcases.
The man Maya left with was Harry.”Maya, please slow down,” I had pled. “We can talk after the girls are
asleep.””Robert, that’s all we ever do,” she yelled. “Speak. Count the bills. Stretch groceries. And act as though this is sufficient.
I moved Shannon closer to my chest. “They are enough.”

Maya first glanced at our infant and then at me.Perhaps for you.You can’t simply abandon six kids.”They are sufficient.
Her eyes flickered. “I can’t have the life I desire from you. Harry, though, can. Robert, he brought me to
the Maldives and bought me a brand-new automobile. Do you realize the kind of life he provides for me? “The life I deserve?”Maya,” I muttered. “Our daughter can hear you.”
She gave Adele a quick look. “Then maybe she’ll learn not to settle.”
Then she slammed the door, leaving me with six females who suddenly became my entire world—no kiss for Shannon, no pledge to call. You can be heard by our daughter.
Adele was seated across from me in the kitchen.I said, “I can tell her no.” “This is your wedding.”Let her know she’s welcome.
My stomach fell. “Adele.”I really do mean it.You’re not the target of her. She will be performing.I am aware. It’s your wedding. So why allow her to do so?
Adele gave me a long look. “Because you shielded us from the truth for fifteen years. I believe it’s time
you were shielded by the truth.
I became motionless.”No.”You understand what I’m requesting.”The box remains in its same location.I believe it’s time you were shielded by the truth.””Dad, the box.”
I had sent Maya fifteen years’ worth of items, all of which had been returned.
Birthday greetings. photos from school. programs for recitals. notifications of graduation. copies of emails. envelopes that were returned. Before they stopped asking if Mom may return again, the girls
made cards.
I hadn’t kept it to exact retribution.
I had saved it in case my girls asked if I had tried.
I wanted to respond in the affirmative.”Dad, the box.”I remarked, “That box is ugly.”Adele remarked,
“What she did was ugly.” “The box is just proof.”It’s your wedding. It’s not a courtroom. You are being put on trial by her.
I got up and held onto the back of a chair. “Let people think what they want, hon.”No, father. Being both
parents to all of us is wearing you out. This additional pressure is unnecessary for you.”The box is only evidence.
Adele took out a printed message from her folder. Two weeks ago, she wrote to me.
I grabbed the document.
I was resentful, Maya had told Adele. that I had caused difficulties. that I intended to punish her by keeping the girls near.”Why didn’t you tell me?”because I was curious about her initial actions.”Two weeks ago, she wrote to me.And now?”I finally understand.
Adele’s fiancé, Jerome, entered the kitchen holding seating cards and halted upon seeing our faces.”Bad time?”
Adele gave him a look. “My mother texted Dad.”
Jerome put down the cards. “She’s coming?”Dad received a text from my mom.”With Harry,” Adele remarked. “And I need the box.”
I gave him a look. “Don’t get dragged into this.”In three days, I’m being married into this family,” he
declared. “I think the dragging already happened.”
Adele put her hand on my arm. “Please, Dad. I’ll take care of it.”You have no idea what that box will do.I am already aware of the effects of her deception.Dad, please. Let me take care of it.

I turned to face my daughter. The girl was no longer small, but I could still see her on the stairs.”What will you do with it?”Only use it if she is lying.”And if she doesn’t?”After that, it remains closed.
That seemed reasonable.Only use it if she is lying.
The box was hidden behind an unused blanket and old papers, just as it had always been. I used both
hands to pull it down and carried it back.I placed it on the table and said, “There.” “Fifteen years.”
I got up early on the day of the wedding.
Jerome entered the small room where I was struggling with my tie.Do you need assistance?
I got up before the sun came up.I answered, “I raised six girls.” “You’d think I could handle fabric by now.”
He tied the knot. “You managed the challenging aspect. It’s all about Adele today. However, I am aware of what it took to bring her here.
I had to blink.”Take care of her.”I’ll do it.
Lucille entered the room as if she were going to engage in combat when the door opened.I brought up six girls.””I’m going outside before I say something I can’t take back if Maya makes a scene,” she
declared.
Shannon emerged behind her, twirling her bracelet around her wrist while wearing a delicate blue dress.”Dad?””Yes, darling?”Must I give her a hug?
There was silence in the room.
I touched her shoulders with both hands. “No. No one is hugged simply because they are related by blood.Must I give her a hug?
She lowered her shoulders. “Okay.”
She hadn’t eaten because Piper kept asking if everyone had eaten.
The doors then opened.
Even before I saw Maya, I knew she was here.
The space moved.
The voices became quieter.
Maya entered the room in a glittering gown that appeared more appropriate for a gala than her
daughter’s wedding. At her throat, diamonds glittered. Harry, well-groomed and affluent, followed closely by his family, strolled beside her.
The doors then opened.
Maya extended her arms upon seeing Adele.”My lovely girl!”
The room echoed with her voice.Maya spoke loudly enough for Harry’s family to hear, “I dreamed of this
day.” “You have no idea how long I’ve dreamed of seeing you like this.”
Adele grinned, but I recognized that grin. It was courteous rather than welcoming.”I’m happy you made it,” she remarked.”My lovely girl!”
Maya put her hand on Adele’s cheek.
She then faced me. “Robert.”Maya.
She glanced at my suit. “You look tired.”Parenting for fifteen years will accomplish that.
Harry moved to the back of her.
Maya’s smile became more intense. “Don’t start today.”
Maya put her hand on Adele’s cheek.I had no intention of doing so.This is Adele’s wedding.I am aware. I’m here for that reason.”
Her gaze became more focused. “You always were good at making yourself look noble.”
My jaw clenched.
Over Maya’s shoulder, Adele glanced at me.

Not quite yet.
I gulped the response I was about to give. This is Adele’s nuptials.
Soon later, the ceremony began. I briefly noticed the girl from the stairs once more as Adele put her arm
through mine.”Dad, you’re squeezing my hand,” she said.
Everyone stood when the doors opened.
When we got to Jerome, he gave Adele a look that suggested he understood what she had endured without asking.
Who presented her was questioned by the officiant.Dad, you’re holding my hand tightly.”
I parted my lips.
Adele gave me an arm squeeze. “The man who raised me does.”
There were murmurs in the room.
I gave her a cheek kiss and took a step back.
Maya had stopped grinning.
Adele gave me an arm squeeze.
I let the wedding be lovely for an hour. Adele didn’t cry till Jerome did. Mia sobbed alongside them both.
Without taking her eyes off Maya, Lucille handed her a tissue.
I then heard Maya close to Harry’s family. She remarked, “I wanted to be there.” “I did, of course.
However, Robert made things challenging.
Harry gave a nod. “Maya spent years trying. He kept the females apart.
Beside him, a woman gazed at me.
Maya let out a sigh. “You don’t know what it does to a mother to be kept from her babies.”
I put down my glass of water. He kept the females apart.
Penelope materialized next to me. “Dad.”
Mia had tears in her eyes. “Please tell me you heard that.”I heard.
Lucille spoke in a quiet voice. “Say the word.”
In a whisper, Piper said, “Not here. Please.”
Shannon simply gazed at Maya.
I moved forward by one step.Tell me you heard that, please.”
Adele put her hand on my arm.”Not yet, Dad.”She is lying about us all.I am aware. So why hold off?
Adele turned to face the white box next to the gift table.Because we’re not responding angrily to a lie this time. We are responding to it with evidence.
Maya laughed as if she were winning across the room. She is lying about us all.
Maya got up and grabbed the microphone before the scheduled speakers concluded.”If I may,” she responded, grinning at Harry. “A mother should say a few words on her daughter’s wedding day.”
I scraped back in my chair.
First to stand was Adele.
Maya raised the microphone. “Adele, my beautiful girl, from the day you were born, I dreamed of seeing
you in white.”
Adele’s expression remained composed.I saw you dressed in white in my dream.”The love of a mother never fades,” Maya added. “Even when life, pain, and other people pull her away from her children.”

There was silence in the room.Certain things are beyond the comprehension of children. A mother may occasionally be separated from her offspring.
Adele moved to the front. “Actually, Mom, before you finish, I have something for you.”
Penelope and Lucille produced the satin-ribbon-tied white box.
Maya blinked, then grinned more broadly. “For me?”I’ll give you something.””For you,” Adele remarked. “Open it.”
Maya lifted the lid after releasing the ribbon.
She just stared at first.
There were fifteen envelopes with a year on each label. Photos, programs, invites, returned letters,
printed emails, and my old notebook with the shattered spine were all underneath them.
Maya’s face became colorless. “What’s this?”
There were fifteen envelopes inside.
Adele moved in closer. “Fifteen years of things Dad sent you and you sent back.”
Maya reached for an envelope. “This is fake.””No,” I replied.
Maya’s eyes flickered. “Robert, don’t.”
A tiny pink card was raised by Adele. When Piper was nine years old, she created this. “Please come to my birthday, Mom,” it begs.
Piper’s mouth was shut.Dad sent you stuff for fifteen years, and you returned them.”
Adele picked up a picture from school. “This was Shannon’s first day of school.”
Shannon gazed at it. “I’ve never seen that.”I said, “I submitted it. “It came back.”
“You had no right to do this at a family event,” Maya yelled.
Adele gave her a look. “My wedding.”
The correction struck forcefully.
Adele picked up a picture from school.
Maya’s voice faltered. “Your father poisoned you.”
Adele remained silent. “No. Long after you were no longer deserving of it, he kept your reputation safe.”
Adele then grabbed my notebook.
My chest constricted. “Adele.”
She asked silently as she glanced at me.
I wanted to decline.
However, Maya had just referred to me as the “man who kept six daughters from their mother.”You were poisoned by your father.
I nodded just a little bit.
It was opened by Adele. “The second year. Adele questioned Maya’s absence from her school play. I

expressed my affection to her. One day, hopefully, that will be sufficient.
My eyes were burning.
Adele flipped a page. “The sixth year. Shannon sobbed in the drive after accidentally referring to her
teacher as “Mom.” I informed her that families can take many different forms. I didn’t cry till she went to sleep.I expressed my affection for her.
There was a little card inside an empty frame at the bottom of the box.We never received the mother-daughter picture.God, oh God. “How dare you?” Maya let out a scream.
Adele remained composed. “You were concerned about your appearance in front of your new family
when you came here. I thus wanted them to see the family you left behind.
Maya betrayed me. “Robert, say anything. Inform her that there is more to the story.”Oh my God.”
I got up.”It’s not,” I said.
Maya’s expression changed as if she believed I could save her.The entire narrative is awful. I implored you to give me a call. I pled with you to send cards. I pled with you to keep in mind that these weren’t
furniture you left in a house you outgrew, but rather young ladies.”
Harry gazed at her. “You told me he changed his number.”The entire narrative is awful.I answered, “I
didn’t change the number. “The same email. same residence. You simply liked the narrative in which I was the antagonist.
Maya muttered, “You’re humiliating me.””No,” I replied. “This untruth was created by you. All we are doing is standing where it fell.
Maya turned to face Harry.
He took a step back.
No one trailed behind.
Then Jerome cautiously raised the microphone. “I think it’s time for the father-daughter dance.”You’re
making me seem bad.”
Adele grasped my hand. “You can stop carrying it now.”I’m not sure how.”Then allow us to assist,” Shannon remarked.
I broke at that point.
For fifteen years, I believed that being strong meant being on one’s own.
My daughters proved to me that evening that they were stronger than six sets of hands.
