Malia Obama, the adult daughter of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, is quietly pursuing a separate career. She even changed her name.
The Heart, which is the 25-year-old’s first movie as a director, has had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
It was surprising that the movie’s credits didn’t have her family’s last name.
Malia Ann Obama was born on July 4, 1998. She obtained her middle name from her father’s grandmother, who died of ovarian cancer in 1995 when she was 52 years old. After graduating from Harvard and growing up in the public eye as the President’s daughter, Malia decided to become a screenwriter.
Malia directed and wrote the screenplay for her most recent movie, The Heart, under the name Malia Ann. Malia adored the first showing of her movie, and she looked great on the festival’s red carpet earlier this year.
Malia has made movies before, but The Heart is her first genuine movie. She wrote for the show Swarm in 2021, which was then released on Amazon Prime. Swarm, which starred notable women like Billie Eilish and Rory Culkin, was a great way for her to launch her career.
“Some of her pitches were really crazy, but they were still really good and interesting.” Janine Nabers, one of the people who made Swarm, told E! Online that Malia is a good writer. “She made important contributions.” She genuinely loves her job.
Stephen Glover, the executive producer of Swarm, wanted to make it obvious that Malia was treated the same as everyone else on the creative team, even though everyone knew she was the president’s daughter.
He said to Vanity Fair, “We can’t let her go just because she’s the daughter of the [former] President.” No, she really is cool and down to earth. So, it’s not a big deal.
Barack and Michelle Obama wished their daughter Malia a happy 25th birthday and told her how much they loved her.
On Instagram, Barack commented, “Happy birthday to this young woman who is beautiful, funny, and talented.” “Maalia, I hope 25 brings you everything you want and more.”
Michelle wrote, “Happy birthday, Malia!” much like her husband did. I feel so happy to be your mom and to watch you grow into the amazing young woman you are. 💕 I adore you a lot!
