Kmart’s “Blue Light Special” – Boy, do I remember those days

The history of Kmart starts in 1899 when Sebastian Spurling Kresge, a driven businessman with a goal to transform retail, founded the S.S. Kresge Company. In Memphis, Tennessee, Kresge teamed up with another retail pioneer, John McCrory, to start his career in retail. Together, they oversaw modest shops that provided a range of products at reasonable costs—a notion that would later play a key role in the history of Kmart.

But as is frequently the case in business, alliances can alter. Following their separation, Kresge took full ownership of his stores. He jumped at the chance to extend his company and opened a number of locations in eight cities between Pittsburgh and Chicago. From the 1920s until the 1960s, Kresge’s businesses flourished, and this signaled the start of his gradual ascent in the retail sector.

The Origin of Kmart
The biggest step Kresge’s company took into the future of retail didn’t happen until 1962. A visionary leader, Harry Cunningham guided the business into the rapidly expanding low-cost retail sector. Cunningham oversaw the building of the first full-sized Kmart in Garden City, Michigan, so this was a crucial time. Kmart was intended to be a big-box discount retailer that provided customers with a huge selection of goods at reduced costs. American consumers, who were starting to demand greater convenience and value from their retail experiences, found resonance with the idea.

It’s interesting to note that in this new age of retail revolution, Kmart wasn’t acting alone. Sam Walton opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, right before Kmart made its debut. The same Rhode Island store, Ann & Hope, was the inspiration for both Kmart and Walmart. It was one of the country’s earliest big-box discount department stores. The retail rivalry between two of the greatest brands in the business, Walmart and Kmart, began with this shared vision.

Specialized in Blue Lights
One of Kmart’s most recognizable marketing campaigns, the “Blue Light Special,” debuted in 1965. This promotional tactic turned into a symbol of the Kmart shopping experience. A limited-time sale on selected products would be indicated to shoppers by a blue light flashing over a defined location in the store. The now-famous “Attention Kmart Shoppers” message would play over the speakers, drawing in customers and increasing sales. The Blue Light Special grew to represent Kmart’s dedication to offering excellent value at any time and became an iconic part of the store’s brand.

The Golden Age of Kmart
Kmart saw enormous expansion and success during the 1970s. The company opened an incredible 271 locations in a single year in 1976, making retail history. With the astounding achievement of opening 17 million square feet of new sales space in just one year, this expansion cemented Kmart’s position as a retail behemoth. Because of Kmart’s immense reach, well-known celebrities like Jaclyn Smith and Martha Stewart were willing to support the store, which improved the attractiveness and image of the company.

By 1977, Kmart accounted for almost 95% of S.S. Kresge Company revenues, solidifying its position as the company’s main power. After formally changing its name from S.S. Kresge to Kmart Corporation, the firm acknowledged the enormous impact of its Kmart stores. The change in emphasis from Kmart’s beginnings in modest dime stores to the large-scale, low-cost retail strategy that characterized its success was reflected in this rebranding.

History
Due to its expansion throughout the course of the 20th century, Kmart has become one of the most recognizable stores in American history. Its strategic leadership under individuals like Harry Cunningham and inventions like the Blue Light Special drove it into a golden age where it controlled the retail scene. But as the retail sector changed, Kmart’s ability to adapt would be put to the test by issues including shifting consumer behavior and heightened competition.
