The woman’s custom license plate sounds “offensive,” so the DMV demands that she surrender it.
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has requested that a woman from New Hampshire give up her 15-year-old vanity license plate because it contains the word “Pee” on it. Wendy Auger, who resides in Rochester, New Hampshire’s Gonic neighborhood, selected the license plate “PB4WEGO” as a lighthearted reference to the parental proverb “Pee before we go.”
But according to the DMV, vanity plates with images of body fluids were not allowed. Others have agreed with Auger, describing the ruling as an assault on her right to free speech and arguing that situations such as these should live according to the state’s motto, “Live Free Or Die.”
Auger has made jokes about how “it would just stink” if her license plate was taken off of her car. She added that she “jumped on it” when the state announced an increased character limit since she had always wanted the license plate.
Because Auger’s registration is protected by privacy rules, the state has stated that it is unable to comment on her case. The state did clarify in an email that the vanity plate regulations were modified in response to a New Hampshire Supreme Court order, making them “very specific.”
While awaiting the state’s ultimate ruling, Auger expressed her belief that “talking about peeing isn’t offensive.”
