The 1980s saw actress Joan Van Ark rise to fame for her role as Valene Ewing on the hit television program Dallas. She made a brief return to her role on the spinoff series Knots Landing in 2012, although the majority of her notoriety came from this role.
Van Ark is blissfully wed to her high school love, and the two of them have a kid. Even at eighty, she is still going strong. Van Ark asserted in a recent interview that she was the only one responsible for Knots Landing’s demise.
During her early childhood, her family moved to Boulder, Colorado. The change of scenery was beneficial to her later in her career.
Van Ark was always sure that she wanted to work as an actor. When the quarterback for her high school football team declined to invite her to prom, she claimed to have known she was destined for the entertainment industry. Her parents supported her goals and helped her along the way, despite the fact that they lacked experience in the movie industry. Van Ark has had a prestigious career starring in television and motion pictures for over 50 years.
After failing to get the part for which she had auditioned, Joan Van Ark was given the position of flower girl in a play. She decided to pursue acting more seriously because she found the experience enjoyable. She found that she loved performing, and it started to take on a big role in her life.
Van Ark met actress Julie Harris while doing theater in Denver and subsequently enrolled at Yale Theatre School. Harris urged Van Ark to pursue a career in theater and acting. Van Ark was the youngest person to ever be awarded a scholarship at the esteemed university and the second woman to enroll there.

Van Ark debuted as an actress in The Miser at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in 1963. After a year at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, she moved to the South to work with the national touring company Barefoot in the Park.
Van Ark was not operating on stage, but rather in front of a screen. She made her Broadway debut as a result, and in 1971, after starring in The School for Wives, she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She made cameo appearances on various television episodes, including Temperature’s Rising, Spider-Woman, Days of Our Lives, and even in a Bonanza episode.
Joan Van Ark was still seeking her important breakout role as the 1980s drew near. Her multiple appearances on Dallas in 1978′ as Valene Ewing helped her snag the role of a lifetime.
A popular Dallas spinoff, Knots Landing aired on television from 1979 until 1993. Joan Van Ark, who appeared in 327 episodes, played Valene Ewing.
She became well-known as a cast member and co-starred in the show alongside Michele Lee (Karen) and Ted Shackleford (Gary). Knots Landing, albeit a Dallas spinoff, aired on CBS years prior to the Ewings’ TV show premiere.
Dallas was picked to be the big, rich family program the network had originally wanted. But Knots Landing proved to be a big smash, and the studio realized how big of a hit Dallas had become. In terms of ratings, it made it into the top 20 TV shows after just one season.
After 13 seasons, Van Ark appeared to have struggled with the decision of whether or not to leave Knots Landing. In the end, she made the decision to cease filming the show in order to pursue other endeavors. She knew that artists needed to push themselves and keep evolving, but she also felt comfortable and safe continuing on the program.
In a great number of movies and TV series, Joan Van Ark has been an exceptional actor. After quitting the soap opera profession, she went on to act in many well-known shows, including The Young and the Restless and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She acted as Gloria Fisher in 55 episodes of the latter show from 2004–2005.
While many married other celebrities, Joan Van Ark and John Marshall’s marriage was unique. After meeting as Boulder High School classmates, they were married in 1966 on a military installation in Germany.
In 1969, Vanessa Marshall, their daughter, was born. Like her parents, Vanessa made the decision to pursue a career in entertainment. She is a well-known voice actor who has voiced characters in animated movies, video games, and TV series.
Joan Van Ark has had appearances in the TV shows Knots Landing and Dallas. She has received accolades from critics for both of her performances.
