Bishop Who Advocated for LGBTQ+ and Migrant Rights Under Trump Releases New Message

Those who backed her received a special greeting from Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde.

Following her criticism of Donald Trump’s remarks on immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community, the Bishop of Washington has posted a new statement on social media.

As soon as he took office, Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders that prohibited immigrants from entering and staying in the nation, including the most contentious one that said there are “only two genders.”

Following this action, Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde made the decision to confront Trump about it at a service on January 21 at the Washington National Cathedral.

On social media, this sparked a heated debate among some users, while others defended the bishop, claiming that her call for “mercy” was reasonable.

The first ‘plea’ she made was: “Mr. President, you have the faith of millions of people. Furthermore, you have experienced the providential hand of a loving God, as you informed the country yesterday.

“I pray that you will show mercy to the people in our nation who are currently afraid in the name of our God. Children of Democratic, Republican, and Independent households are homosexual, lesbian, and transgender, and some of them are afraid for their life.

“And the people, the people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants… they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals.”

Trump declared that the ceremony was “not too exciting” and that he “didn’t think it was a good service,” leading him to conclude that “they could do much better.”

Later, in response to Trump’s remark, Bishop Mariann told CNN, “I wanted to counter, as gently as I could, with a reminder of their humanity and their place in our wider community.”

In her first Instagram post since November 2024, she has now thanked everyone who stood up for her and urged others to be bold, compassionate, and supportive of one another.

In yesterday’s (February 25) video, Bishop Mariann said: “Hello friends, this is Bishop Mariann. I wanted to return to social media after taking a hiatus to express my gratitude.

“The letters, calls, notes, gifts, and expressions of gratitude, support, and encouragement mean so much to me that I cannot express how much I appreciate them.”

“I really believe that there is a spirit of love and goodness in this country that permeates every one of us, and that the moment has come for us to unite, embrace one another’s strength, and learn how to be brave together while clinging to the positive aspects of ourselves and our nation.

When we keep in mind that we are never alone and that there are a hundred people standing strong in case one of us falters, we can do this.

“There are times when we support those who are unable to, and we believe that God will use us all to create the kind of community and society that we all deserve and that we wish to leave for future generations.

“Take good care, have courage and remember together we can all be brave.”

There is’more to come’, Bishop Mariann’s post’s caption informed her followers.
