A Miracle Baby: How She Survived Against All Expectations After Weighing Less Than a Pound

For all the right reasons, baby Manushi from Rajasthan, India, is known as a tiny miracle. At just 28 weeks into her pregnancy, Seeta, 48, gave birth to this lovely girl via cesarean section. Unfortunately, physicians found that Seeta had very high blood pressure and that her baby wasn’t getting enough blood through the placenta.

The choice to birth the baby was made in a flash.

Manushi weighed a mere fourteen ounces when she was born. Because she was so small and most of her organs, including her kidneys, heart, brain, and lungs, were immature, her odds of surviving were quite low.

Manushi spent six months in the neonatal intensive care unit before her organs matured enough to allow her to be discharged from the hospital. She weighed 5.2 pounds when she was released by the physicians.

But it wasn’t an easy battle for her life. Manushi was put on a ventilator as soon as she was born, and her prospects of surviving were less than 1%. She defeated the odds, believe it or not.

Manushi was unable to receive adequate nutrition due to her underdeveloped intestine, so medical professionals gave her all the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids she required directly into her blood.

Manushi began nursing when she was 7 weeks old, which was a positive sign. Her other organs began to grow regularly at this point, and she began breathing more on her own.

Contrary to popular belief in some regions of India, doctors were determined to spare this girl’s life in order to send a message that female children are just as essential as male children.

“We wanted to send out a message that a girl child must be protected, so we decided to save the infant’s life and give her the medical care and attention she needed,” said Dr. Sunil Janged, the hospital’s director. “We provided her with the care and attention she needed.”

The world’s lightest surviving infant, Emilia Grabarczyk, was born in Wittenberg, Germany, in 2015, weighing only 8 ounces, according to records.

We hope that baby Manushi has a happy future.
