She had no other option but to make the difficult decision to give her 14-year-old daughter the responsibility of looking for her four younger siblings.
Henderson thought that this was permissible under Georgia law, which permits children 13 years of age and older to be left alone and in charge of younger siblings for a maximum of twelve hours. But when her four-year-old brother ran off to play with a neighbor for a little while, a worried parent called the police.
Unexpectedly, Henderson was approached by the police, who then handcuffed and arrested him. She is in the midst of a legal struggle that is quite stressful and unknown. She might spend up to a year in jail and pay a $1000 fine if found guilty.
