Teen Balancing Work and Graduation Day Receives Life-Changing $130K Gift

Mykale Baker did not follow the usual plan of most high school graduates and wasn’t out with friends and family having fun. Because of his hard work, the results are now clear.

Only hours after completing high school graduation, Baker could be seen at Burger King, dressed in his stole and medals, still on duty.

Maria Mendoza was a fellow student at the ceremony and photographed the moment which was soon shared and helped transform Baker’s situation.

New York Post reports that Mendoza observed the teen behind the drive-thru at Colonial High at around 10:00 PM on May 21.

Many graduates celebrated after their walk across the stage, but one young man quietly demonstrated what it means to be determined, Mendoza said on GoFundMe.

Moved by Baker’s good mood and calm presence, Mendoza shot a TikTok that is now viewed by over 3.9 million people.

He didn’t do it because he wanted others to notice him. He’s totally unaware that people all over the world have heard about his story. Thousands of people were influenced by his strong work ethic, genuine modesty and determination, she concluded.

An online video inspires a wave of people to come together and take action.
Mendoza felt inspired instead of just being impressed. After seeing the video, she launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Baker go to college and many responded very generously.

By early morning on Saturday (May 31), over $115,000 has been raised by the campaign, starting with $22,000 in just a few days. The main purpose of the campaign is to cover the cost of Baker’s tuition, books, materials and any other school expenses.

Let’s help and support this young guy together as a community, the fundraiser suggests. “Let’s demonstrate to him that many people are watching him from all over the world and wishing him success.”

One donor stated, “Congratulations on finally graduating and best wishes for your future career,” I am really encouraged by your enthusiasm and commitment.”

Another person expressed, “Congrats, Mykale!!! Never lose sight of how great you can be at anything you want to do!!!

Don’t even realize you inspire me every day. Stick to what you believe in and go after what you want. Congratulations on completing your education and I wish you the best for your future,” wrote a third person.

From Being Uncertain to Opening Possibilities
Mendoza came back to Baker on May 26, still not aware of how widely known he was, to give Baker the collected donations and he started crying. After that, he made a TikTok to show gratitude to Mendoza and his crying mother, embracing them both.

Baker decided he would need to take a break from school until he could afford it, but after receiving help from the people in his community, he now plans to continue his education immediately and get into mechanical engineering.

“I never imagined this for myself and I am grateful,” he finished.

A Key Point in My Life
He now has a direction to follow, after having considered not going to college because of his money problems.

Adventure Baker said, “I witnessed other YouTubers get great surprises, but never thought it could happen for me.”

After experiencing all this, Mendoza reflected to 11 Alive by saying his dedication and quiet strength truly touched him. I wanted to do something to pay respect to that experience. I feel glad that I could do something for him.

Mykale, congratulations!
