The new executive order was signed by Donald Trump with the intention of improving patient cost transparency.
In order for patients to compare the costs of receiving treatment in different locations, healthcare providers and insurance are required to make their pricing publicly available.
In the past, discussions on healthcare costs have typically taken place behind closed doors between physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies.
This action has given Trump some support and represents a more aggressive strategy to increase adherence to rules that Trump imposed in 2019 but Biden repealed.
Earlier this week, Donald Trump signed the new executive order in front of reporters while defending it.
It is one of the most significant things that can happen to healthcare cost reduction, he stated.
It takes a little bit to start, but Biden stopped it right away when he became office, which I thought was a horrible tragedy.
“We’re going to get started, and a few key elements have further strengthened it.
“When you go to a hospital and see a doctor, you are not even permitted to talk about it,” he added, “but it permits people to go out and bargain with price.
“This gives you the opportunity to discuss it with others and it is actually one of the biggest… there are a few people who have been around for a while who believe that there are true benefits to this and that this is the biggest thing you can do for lowering prices.”
Although Trump acknowledged that this action has not been well received in some quarters, he ultimately maintained that it would benefit patients.
“I think you could say it isn’t great for hospitals, but they say if you have a great hospital that really knows what it is doing, it is actually great for the hospital because everyone wants to go there,” he continued. “It is not so good for the pharmaceuticals, the companies that make the drugs.”
Despite Trump’s assertions that this will ultimately result in cheaper costs, organizations representing the insurance sector contend that this is not the case. According to them, cost-control measures would actually result in higher premiums.
In addition, hospital organizations claimed that revealing the costs of every good and service during Trump’s previous administration infringed against their First Amendment rights.
They claimed that the provision took away their ability to bargain with insurers over rates.
