Pictures of This Miss Universe Contestant Who Placed in the Top 20 Was Described as “Disgusting” Due to Her Weight
As the first plus-sized contestant in Miss Universe history to place in the top 20, Jane Garrett faced both criticism and acclaim while competing. Look at these stunning photos of the beauty who stood up to the nasty comments that some people made about her.
El Salvador was the focal point of the 72nd annual Miss Universe pageant, which took place in November 2023 and featured contestants from 84 nations. Jane Dipika Garrett was one of them, representing Nepal with poise and determination.
At the young age of 22, Garrett drew international recognition as the first plus-sized delegate in the competition’s history, breaking down barriers in a field often defined by conventional beauty standards.
The renowned tournament, which has previously produced well-known winners like Olivia Culpo, left an impression on the Kathmandu native.
As Miss Universe Nepal, she advocated for her country and gained admirers with her unwavering support and beauty.
An Pioneer on Miss Universe’s Stage
Garrett’s message as a nursing student was one of inclusivity, body acceptance, and raising awareness of PCOS, mental health, and hormonal health.
She became well-known throughout the world for her holistic view of beauty, which put content before fashion. Beyond only honoring her nation’s position on the global stage, Garrett’s participation signaled a shift in the beauty industry toward embracing diversity.
She confidently walked the runway wearing a metallic one-piece halterneck swimsuit. Not only did the waist ruching highlight her figure, it also conveyed a sense of self-assurance.
Garrett’s South Asian background was acknowledged in the realm of evening gowns. In a crimson and gold figure-hugging dress that combined traditional design elements with contemporary flair, she looked gorgeous. Her passion for presenting Nepal and its rich history was apparent in the intricate pattern and vibrant colors.
Garrett, on the other hand, was open about the highs and lows of her unprecedented run for Miss Universe 2023. The first plus-sized competitor to place in the top 20, she had to overcome many obstacles along the way.
About Taking Criticism and Breaking Down Boundaries
After competing in Miss Universe 2023, Garrett spoke candidly about her struggles with self-worth, her desire to inspire others, and the unfavorable feedback she had received.
Garrett admitted that it was a pleasant surprise to place in the top 20. Having battled food issues and low self-esteem in the past, she said the achievement was quite reassuring. “I honestly didn’t anticipate receiving so much praise on stage or so much attention,” she remarked.
And I didn’t have any expectations. My only goal was to speak for my country and for women everywhere. And I was eager to do it,” Garrett added.
Not only did her on-stage performance garner a lot of praise, but it also altered the way society perceives beauty. “I came with a humble heart, but when I won on that stage, the entire audience gave me the loudest applause,” she said.
“And that felt so good because it was like a breakthrough moment for me and for society; they see something different, they see real-size beauty,” Miss Universe Nepal continued.
Although Garrett’s vacation ended when she got in the top 20, she rejoiced on Instagram with the post, “Top 20 baby!” All of my admirers and supporters are much appreciated. I did my best, and that’s what matters.
The remark continued, saying, “I’m so proud to be representing real-size beauty around the world and breaking the stereotypes of beauty pageants.” I will always cherish this life-changing moment and am so happy for the new Miss Universe.
The boldness of Garrett inspired many; one reader exclaimed, “Goddess!” Another person on social media wrote, “So beautiful.” “Gorgeous baby” was entered in third place, followed by “You are very beautiful” in fourth.
Her participation, however, also garnered harsh criticism because of the numerous online comments that ridiculed her appearance. One person said, “Hey, I’ve seen girls much prettier than her.” “Miss Jumbo!” Another person said, “Don’t miss the universe.” “Really!” a third person added. There is nothing admirable about you.
She was aware of some of the negative comments being made about her, Garrett said. “That’s disgusting,” or “Oh, she’s a whale,” are some of the things I observe. I’m going to vomit. For example, “She’s encouraging obesity.”For example, “How about you go to the gym?” They don’t appear to know my tale either. “They have no idea what I’m going through,” she said.
According to Garrett, her weight problems were caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a medical condition that causes hormonal imbalances and makes it challenging to maintain a constant weight. It is therefore very easy for us to gain weight. She stated that “even if we just look at a piece of cake, we can gain weight.”
She had gained a significant amount of weight due to PCOS and hormonal issues, which had a detrimental effect on her mental health and self-esteem because she momentarily felt unworthy and unattractive.
When the South Asian beauty reflected on her early years, she disclosed that her ambition to be a model led her to partake in harmful behaviors in an attempt to fit in with society’s expectations.
Because I wanted to be a model as well, I used to starve myself when I was younger. As a child, I wanted to be a model, therefore I struggled with food disorders and mental health issues,” Garrett said.
“And because that’s just their body type, all the girls around me were really skinny,” she continued, “especially when you’re a teenager.” And when I compared myself to many of the girls there, I would feel inadequate.
Garrett remarked, “After I learned to love myself, I really had to remove all of those messages that were coming from society as well as coming from my own mind.” Therefore, I had to genuinely brainwash myself again before I could accept and embrace who I am.
After she took the stage as Miss Universe, she decided to disregard the criticism. “The fact that [the haters] are just disparaging me on social media is the problem. I don’t care about it. The brutality in society is widespread. She stated, “People can be really harsh at times.”
Despite the criticism, Garrett continued to work toward redefining beauty standards and promoting body positivity. “I think that body positivity basically means accepting your current body. You love and accept yourself for who you are, and you’re also taking steps toward a healthy lifestyle,” she said.
In April 2024, Garrett made her runway return, showcasing her everlasting confidence and advocacy while dazzled audiences in a glittering body-con dress.
Dispelling falsehoods and sparking change were more important aspects of Jane Garrett’s journey at the 72nd Annual Miss Universe pageant than mere competition.
She made a lasting impact on the beauty industry with her persistence by showing the world that genuine beauty transcends size and that sincerity always shines brightest.
