Kentucky Community in Mourning After Church Tragedy

Lexington, Kentucky, on July 14, 2025 A gunman went on a violent rampage that crossed an airport road and a Baptist church sanctuary, shaking up a calm Sunday in Kentucky. The town was still in shock after a state trooper was badly hurt and two churchgoers died.

The trouble began around 11:40 AM close to Blue Grass Airport in Lexington.

A Kentucky State Police (KSP) officer started a traffic stop on Terminal Drive when a nearby traffic camera issued an alarm from its license plate reader.

The stop should have been normal, but it turned violent when the man in the car shot the officer.

At a sad press conference in the afternoon, officials said, “The trooper had apparently pulled over the gunman… when the suspect shot him.”

The shooter, who was hurt, then stole another car and drove about 16 miles to Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington.

The suspect went into the church grounds while cops were chasing them.

Lawrence Weathers, the police chief of Lexington, talked about the horrible things that transpired and claimed that the gunman might have had something to do with the church.

While horrified parishioners sought to get away from the sudden violence, the attacker started fire inside the church.

Sadly, Beverly Gumm, 72, and Christina Combs, 32, were shot and died.

The attack on the church harmed two persons, one of them was in bad shape and had to go to the hospital.

While other cops were chasing the gunman, three officers from the Lexington Police Department confronted him.

Chief Weathers said that the police shot and killed the person in issue.

The cops knew who the shooter was, but they didn’t tell his family until Sunday afternoon.

On the other hand, the KSP trooper who was shot at the airport was sent to a neighboring hospital since he was harmed significantly.

Later, the Lexington Fire Department confirmed that his status was stable.

Gena Roland, a witness, remarked about how scary it was at the airport and how close she came to being hit head-on by the shooter as he drove the wrong way down the airport drive.

Roland said that the trooper was thankfully awake and aware when the ambulance got there, even though he was in a lot of agony.

“It was quite strong.

A lot of nice folks stopped and ran to the trooper.

I believe there were five of us down there before the police and paramedics showed up.

People in the neighborhood stated that dozens of cars were speeding to the airport as a large police and emergency response team arrived.

Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, briefed the press of Gumm and Combs’ deaths right before a news conference at 4:30 PM.

Governor Beshear asked everyone to pray for those who were hurt by these senseless acts of violence. “And let’s be grateful for how quickly the Kentucky State Police and the Lexington Police Department acted.”

Linda Gorton, the mayor of Lexington, felt the same shock and sadness as everyone else in the town.

“Today, a terrible shooting took place in our area, killing and wounding a lot of people. This is also happening in a lot of other towns and cities across the country.

According to Mayor Gorton’s report, a state police officer also was hurt.

She also promised that “the agencies will work together to fully investigate this tragedy” to illustrate how well state and local law enforcement operate together.

On Sunday night, a section of Terminal Drive near the airport stayed closed while police worked on the first crime scene.

Things at the airport, such flights and operations, returned back to normal.

As part of the inquiry, authorities blocked off a blue Nissan that they thought was the shooter’s first car.

Another gunfire incident at 3:49 AM on Sunday brought more violence to the day, and Lexington Police were called to it.

Two men who drove themselves to the hospital and a woman who may have died from her injuries were harmed in that event, which took place on Winchester Road near Liberty Road on the other side of town from the airport.

They still don’t know if this gunshot before dawn is related to the later rampage at the church and airport.

On Sunday, it was also a terrible day in Kentucky when another shooting happened near the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, where the Run 4 the Roses basketball tournament was going on.

The police are still probing into the gunshots that happened at the airport and church in Lexington.

The police are looking into why the gunman did what he did, what church he might have gone to, and the complete chain of events that led to the deaths of Christina Combs and Beverly Gumm. They are also praying that the injured trooper and churchgoers get better.

The people of Lexington are sad and looking for answers after a horrific event.
