Because of her highly pigmented skin, beautiful South Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech has experienced discrimination and bullying. Despite being advised to bleach her complexion, Gatwech has accepted her individual beauty and grown into a self-assured proponent of self-love.
Beginning her journey, Gatwech encountered loneliness and condemnation in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. She experienced bullying and being called “dirty” for having skin in America. She would not, however, allow criticism to define her.
Gatwech, who is now known as the “Queen of the Dark,” has amassed a sizable Instagram following by sharing her passion for her skin and her Sudanese roots. Her self-assurance and attractiveness have motivated thousands, who commend her for accepting her individuality.
Gatwech chuckled when an Uber driver advised her to bleach her complexion, saying, “I’d rather take the hard road.” Her Instagram followers showered her with support after she posted about the event.
For young black girls who are dealing with similar issues, Gatwech offers straightforward advice: “You are beautiful, you are unique, and there are people who love you just the way you are.” Her experience serves as a tribute to the strength of acceptance and self-love.
