When confronted with a person who requires assistance, we have two choices available to us. Our options are to either mutter something nonsensical under our breath and then walk away, or to offer assistance. That is the conclusion that appears to be the most suitable.
It is natural for us to be inclined to assist those individuals whom we are familiar with, such as members of our family and close friends. However, when we come across an unfamiliar person, and homeless persons in particular, we are typically considerably less willing to comply with their requests.
We might be afraid, we might believe that someone else will assist them instead, we might not believe that they truly require assistance, or we might believe that they will use any charity that we provide for them to purchase drugs or alcohol. Homeless persons, regardless of the reasons for their situation, are among the most vulnerable members of our society and, without a doubt, might frequently benefit from assistance.
A young man by the name of Matthew Resendez, who worked at Burger King, seemed to have had a firm grasp on this concept.
In the year 2018, Matthew was working when he found himself confronted by a homeless man who entered the building. Matthew’s practice of serving homeless guys at the restaurant was not unexpected; nonetheless, this specific individual had a question that was out of the ordinary for him to answer.
The impeccably dressed man approached the counter and said in a straightforward manner, “What can I get for fifty cents?”
Following the hearing of his inquiry, Matthew was presented with two choices. For the man to respond with the fundamental truth, which is “Nothing,” fifty cents would not have been enough to purchase even the tiniest appetizer that was offered on the menu. However, Matthew choose not to respond in that manner.
An Example of Generosity Taken
The most heavy dinner on the menu was ordered by Matthew, who paid for it out of his own pocket because he was extremely kind.
It’s possible that the story would have stopped there. On the other hand, a patron of the restaurant happened to observe Matthew’s small act of kindness and responded by offering to pay it forward… and left him a hundred dollar tip!
As soon as Michelle Resendez, Mathew’s mother, learned about the events that transpired on that particular day, she felt an understandable sense of pride for her son. After some time had passed, she finally decided to relate the story on Facebook.
It’s a proud mother moment! A homeless man came into the restaurant where Matthew worked this evening with fifty cents and inquired about whether or not there was anything on the menu that he might purchase. If Matthew were to ask him what he would order if he had the opportunity, the guy would respond that anything would alleviate the sufferings of his hunger. A hefty dinner was ordered by Matthew, who then used his own debit card to pay for the man’s meal. Matthew then rung up the man for the meal. A receipt was presented to him, and he was instructed to take a seat and rest.
It would be a wonderful ending if the tale ended there, but it seems that a woman was watching my kid when he was doing his act of kindness to a stranger. Not only did she award my son with a very big tip, but she also sent a letter to the firm to let them know about the compassionate person they had working for them all along. I am so proud to be his mother, and I take pride in the fact that I have been able to contribute to the development of this young man with a great heart.
There is a possibility that if it were a different member of the staff, they would advise the homeless gentlemen to leave the restaurant without a single item to eat; but, Matthew is not one of those unfortunate individuals. A award was given to him because he is a really remarkable young guy who has the desire to change the way that people who are homeless and destitute are cared for.
