Often, people say that little acts can result in major differences. A 62-year-old homeless veteran in New York named James Walker just said, “Could you give me some spare change, please?” Barron Trump, the youngest son of former President Donald Trump, was the person that the officer met. The things that followed were not only a kind gesture; they left a strong mark on both of their lives and spread across the country.
A Veteran, The Cold, and a Final Moment of Honor
Eight months earlier, he was working as a night security guard and lived in a small apartment in the Bronx. Although he didn’t have much income, he survived. Soon after, he started to experience dizziness, which resulted in trips to the hospital and a doctor’s decision that he had chronic heart failure. Since he could not keep his job, all his bills piled up. Instead of a wardrobe full of things, he had only his backpack, and slept on a cardboard box that was no longer standing tall.
This morning, the cold in New York hurt my face like tiny pieces of glass. James pulled close the buttons on his ripped jacket and started to shift around on the street, close to a busy subway. He did not beg simply because remembering his past was more difficult than asking. Before Sarah and Michael were killed by an accident a decade ago, he promised them he would not forget them. However, food was a constant craving for him at this point. He had eaten nothing since before yesterday, carried only 27 cents with him, and his fingers were getting frostbite.
With the flow of people including sharp-looking managers and young sippers of coffee passing by, James was unseen.

He got up slowly, yelping at the noise his old knees made, how his legs could not support him after so many days of hunger. As soon as he saw Scientist Reynolds, the security guard started being more cautious and one reached for their earpiece.
