What a surprise, Elon Musk is back at it again. If there is one thing that the CEO of Tesla enjoys more than tweeting unpopular opinions and launching rockets, it is a good lawsuit.
What is his aim this time around? That would be none other than Tim Walz, the current governor of Minnesota and a former candidate for the Democratic nomination for vice president.
So, what exactly is the controversy about? All right, fasten your seatbelts because this one has everything: politics, drama on social media, and even gestures that could be considered contentious.

It was the accusation that sent everything off.
It all took place during the inauguration of Donald Trump in the year 2025. A hand gesture was made by Musk, who placed his right hand on his chest and then extended his arm diagonally outward. This occurred when cameras were flashing and the entire world was watching. Now, depending on who you ask, this may have been a gesture of support that was executed with excessive enthusiasm or it could have been something far more sinister.
A. Walz, Tim? It is his firm belief that Musk was displaying a Nazi salute.
Without holding back, Walz stated, “We spent three days debating whether Musk gave a Nazi salute.” This statement was made during an interview that took place on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow. It is obvious that he did.
Prepare to be outraged. Half of the crowd demanded that Musk be held accountable for gesturing in an odd manner, while the other half yelled statements that were defamatory. The internet went absolutely crazy. Musk, who is never one to let things slip, naturally came to the conclusion that he had had enough.
Musk’s Reaction: Here Comes the Lawsuit!
The
Musk responded, “I think I will,” demonstrating his ability to never pass up an opportunity to stir things up. I find Tim Walz to be eerie.
All of a sudden, we found ourselves in the middle of a brand new legal dispute.

It’s a Controversial Salute, or Is It Just an Uncomfortable Sign?
Before we begin to imagine Musk and Walz arguing in a courtroom, let’s take a moment to collect our thoughts and take a step back. What was it that Musk did in reality? It it possible that people are only seeing what they want to see, or was it actually an homage to the Nazis?
Experts and historians have provided their opinions. In the United States, Claire Aubin, who specializes in Nazism, expressed her professional judgment by saying, “My professional opinion is that you are all right, you should believe your eyes.” Essentially, she is of the opinion that Musk was fully aware of what he was doing.
On the other hand, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is not in agreement. They stated that Musk’s gesture was nothing more than a “awkward movement of enthusiasm” rather than the problematic salute that is prohibited in many nations.
So, was Musk only experiencing a little bit of extreme excitement? Then again, was this a nod to the far right that wasn’t quite subtle? The online community continues to be deeply split.
When viewed in a broader context, why is this so important?
I know what you’re thinking: Okay, but why does this even matter in the first place? In addition to the spectacle that is the lawsuit filed by a millionaire against a politician, this drama brings to light something more significant: the degree to which things have gotten increasingly politicized.
We are living in an era in which a single-handed movement has the potential to cause controversy on a global scale. Elon Musk, who was already a divisive personality due to his takeover of X, his controversial political views, and his one-of-a-kind style of humor, has become a lightning rod for both praise and criticism.
On the other side, Walz has had a difficult year with his life. He has been looking for methods to continue to remain important in the political debate ever since he and Kamala Harris were defeated in the election of 2024. His comments about Musk, according to others, were nothing more than a desperate attempt to grab headlines once more. Recently, he gave his support to David Hogg, a well-known gun control activist, for the position of vice chair of the Democratic National Committee.
Whatever Comes After This?
In the event that Musk actually goes through with the case (and let’s face it, for all intents and purposes, he is not exactly known for backing down), this could be a very messy legal battle.
It is well known that they are notoriously difficult to win defamation cases, particularly when they include public individuals. It is highly likely that Walz’s defense will argue that his statement was an opinion rather than a factual claim, which means that it is protected under the principle of free speech.
On the other hand, Musk will be required to demonstrate that Walz intentionally disseminated misleading information with the intention of causing harm.
Given Musk’s nature, it is highly likely that he will live-tweet the entire event.
At the end of the day, regardless of whether Musk was simply waving excitedly or doing something more problematic, one thing is quite clear: he is not going to allow Tim Walz to get away with branding him a Nazi.
It remains to be seen if this case will reach any kind of resolution or whether it will simply become another weird footnote in Musk’s already wild career. One thing, however, is certain: this drama is not even close to being ended.
Come on, everyone, grab some popcorn. It’s going to be a wild journey with this one.
