A Little Girl and a Dog Created a Moment to Remember

Lily Parker was absolutely bewildered when she came to the Willow Creek county fair. She held $52.16 in her little hand, which was all of her savings. She didn’t know if that money would be enough to buy the one specific German Shepherd she wanted that was set to be offered at the auction.

The truth was that the dog wasn’t just any dog; it was a K9 that worked with the girl’s mother, Officer Hannah Parker, who had died in the line of duty a few months before.

Lily loved her German Shepherd, Max, more than anything else. He was someone who had known her mother very well, and Lily was the only one who could take better care of him than she could.

Sadly, the bidding went above $3,000, which was a lot more than what Lily had in her jar. Even though everyone around her laughed, she decided to make a bid. “Girl, this sum isn’t enough,” the auctioneer said to her. The fact was that no one knew how much Lily loved Max. To everyone else, he was simply another dog, but to her, he was a reminder of her mother that she wanted to keep close.

Max saw Lily and started barking as she lost faith in ever having her late mom’s dog with her. He was able to break free at one point and raced directly to her. Everyone was looking at Max and Lily at that moment. It was clear that the two knew each other well because their connection was powerful.

Lily started crying happy tears, and when everyone in the room heard the tale of Lily and Officer Hannah, they all agreed to take their bids back so Lily could take Max home, where he really belonged.

Max’s delight turned into worry that night. He behaved like there was something he wanted Lily and her dad to see. They saw him walk back and forth beside the door, his ears pricked up.

“What has gotten into him?” Lily’s dad inquired. “I don’t know, Dad.”

Max raced directly to the garden shed and started clawing at the door as soon as they opened it. Lily’s dad unlocked it. They found a pile of papers on the floor inside—notes, photos, and documents that Hannah had been gathering. Those were pieces of evidence for a case she was working on. It had names of people that Lily’s dad had never heard of.

He got all those papers together in the morning and took them to the police station.
The investigation of Officer Hanna’s death was reopened. With the new evidence, the police initiated a fresh investigation and unearthed long-overlooked leads. The police were ready to show that Officer Hannah’s death wasn’t merely a random act of violence.

Lily and Max’s story is one of love, loyalty, and hope.
