News of Robert Francis Prevost as the first American pope piqued people’s interest in how things would change in the Church and for him personally. The main question that interests many people is how much the Pope makes.
What is the Pope’s salary?
Although the Pope is a famous leader in the world, the answer you get might surprise you. The Pope is not paid a regular salary and their position is very different from how lucrative many famous or important roles can be.
The Vatican looks after all the Pope’s needs such as where to stay, how to travel, food, health services and protection. As with his predecessors, Pope Leo XIV will have his accommodation, meals and clothes provided for him, but he will not be paid a set wage. He has a beautiful house, is fed well and can use whichever vehicle he likes.
Though the pope might be technically entitled to a minimal pay, reports suggest that a monthly salary of about €2,500 ($2,650) is provided which seems closer to a stipend than a normal salary. Nevertheless, choosing a simple existence is what makes the Pope unique.
Pope Leo XIV will continue the traditions started by Francis.
The custom of a pope not being paid has existed for years. From 2013 to 2025, Pope Francis lived simply, often passed up the chance to collect financial rewards and was known for his plain lifestyle.

Pope Leo XIV is expected to value caring for the spirit, much as Pope John XIII did instead of financial profit. He will keep his life simple and focused on supporting and caring for others, instead of concentrating on his own luxury.
There has been talk of the Pope’s holdings of wealth.
Even though his salary is zero, the Pope manages to live well. The Vatican has said that Pope Francis’ assets could be valued at up to $12 million. The amount includes the Pope’s extra privileges and assets, namely property, vehicles and funds for charity.
While he was Pope, Francis spent money on charitable causes, gifting $215,000 to the program for prisoners in Rome.
Finances in the Vatican

The income of the Vatican comes from the Catholics globally who make donations, from tourists and from the museums in Vatican City.
Yet, the CIA’s World Factbook revealed that in 2013, the Vatican’s revenue was nearly $315 million and its expenses were worse, reaching approximately $348 million.
A type of wealth that is different

Although the Pope does not earn a salary, he has access to important resources. The Vatican ensures that the pope lives well and is able to help others in need.
No matter these privileges, the Pope’s role is to serve and we can expect Pope Leo XIV to continue this tradition rather than try to gain wealth.
