As cases double, health officials express alarm about new COVID wave surges.
COVID has certainly not settled into the background as the number of cases rises again.
The number of cases has more than doubled since January of this year, demonstrating that COVID hasn’t gone away, despite the fact that many people may consider the epidemic to be a horrible nightmare. Covid cases have been steadily rising since the year began as vaccination immunity waned and new strains appeared.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently reported that the “positivity rate” increased from 4.2% to 4.5% in the week ending Sunday, April 6, which led to a 7% rise in hospital patients in England who tested positive for COVID-19. When COVID hit its lowest level in at least two years in early January, the positive rate was only 2.2%, or roughly 1 in 330 people, infected.

Although the level is less around 25% of the peak from last summer, British citizens are cautioned not to become overconfident.
It is doubtful that there will be another “pandemic-level crisis like in 2020,” but according to Dr. Wylie, people who have not had a recent infection or booster are more at risk of contracting new variations.
Based on the 2024 spring vaccination program, the UK Health Security Agency found that individuals who received the vaccine had a more than 40% lower risk of hospitalization with COVID-19 for up to two months after the vaccination compared to those who did not.
As with other respiratory viruses, Dr. Wylie notes, “Seasonal changes and increased indoor social mixing can contribute to the spread.”
A painful throat, cough, congestion, exhaustion, and occasionally a fever or loss of taste or smell are common symptoms, though the latter is less common these days.
The NHS spring booster top-up vaccine is eligible for about 7.5 million people in England. Access to the booster will be available from April 1 to June 17.
